Sister Parishes

We have special programs to help out sister parishes in less fortunate parts of the world (such as Haiti).

Other Programs

From helping someone go to school, do their shopping, stay sober, talk to someone or more more dire needs, Saint Luke The Evangelist has special programs to help our fellow man. You can join these programs and contribute your time, energy or financial donations. Or receive the help you need to get through another day. Visit our Ministry section or talk to our staff.

RICE BOWLS

We are very happy to announce that we have counted the total of $2,554 from the Rice Bowls used during this past Lent. Five hundred dollars came from a direct donation to the parish and this money will remain in our emergency fund. The remaining $2,054 will be sent to Catholic Relief Services which serves the hungry and the poor of the world. Thank you to all who made this amount possible. It is the largest amount that we have ever collected in Rice Bowls.

Still needed for Our Little Brothers and Sisters orphanage: laptop computers. They have also requested children scissors for their summer programs. Please call Gloria Josephs with any questions. Drop off supplies in Parish Center lobby by Gloria's office. Thank you for your generous support.

All Quilters, Knitters, Crocheters ~ Baby Blankets Needed for Children of Haiti: We are looking for volunteers who are willing to make blankets for approximately 300 hospitalized children in Haiti. Many of the children are malnourished and ill with AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria or cancer and will not live past their 5th birthday. Fr Rick has requested blankets for them so they may be comforted in their warmth. This will be a joint project with our Prayer Shawl Ministry. Please call the Parish Center and ask for the prayers and guidelines.

Request: In preparation for an influx of new residents, the Bridge program is furnishing apartments. The apartments that they are furnishing have kitchen tables and little else. They need silverware, dishes, pots/pans and cooking utensils as well as kitchen chairs. If you have any gently used kitchen items that you can donate please drop them off at the Parish Center between the hours of 9am to 5pm . Please contact Kate O’Neill @ 508.755.0333 if you have any large items that will need to be picked up.

Hugs for Haiti ~ there has been a tremendous response to our request for baby blankets for the children for Haiti .  They are knitted, crocheted, quilted, fleeced and tied, as well as bought.  We thank you for your overwhelming generosity.  A few people have asked how they could help because they do not sew or knit.  There are several options; you can buy blankets or you could donate money to help purchase yarn or to help with the shipping.  We are grateful for anything that you would like to do.

Outreach

Thanks to your generosity, our parish each year is able to make contributions to our community (folks right here in our town of Westborough) as well as the County of Worcester, our Worcester diocese and even people in foreign countries (see our sister parish initiatives). Scroll down to find out what we are in need of right now or Click here for the philosophy behind our outreach programs.

As you know, St Luke's Parish has "adopted" the orphanage in Haiti as one of our outreach places to support financially and spiritually. During Lent we will be collecting items and monetary donations. We are asking all of our religious education classes to donate needed items and or money for the orphanage.

Some of the items needed for the 525 children ranging in age from birth to 16 are:

  • socks (not white)
  • t-shirts
  • sweatshirts
  • hair elastics
  • barrettes
  • cloth diapers (no paper diapers)
  • bibs
  • teething toys
  • wash cloths

Items can be dropped in the Parish Center or in the Garage next to the Rectory. [ There will be a box labelled " HAITI" inside the Garage ].

We will also be collecting items and monetary donations all through Lent 2007.

We thank you in advance for your generosity and caring for all of the orphans who so desperately need our support and love.

Blessings,

Dianne Patrick & Gloria Josephs.

Our Parish Outreach Programs

( Our Parish Out Reach coordinator is Pat Gagnon. She leads our Outreach Ministry)

Our Parish Outreach Program is a model of service in which all parishioners are given the opportunity to continue the charitable ministry of Christ by sharing the diverse gifts that they received in Baptism. Our purpose is to provide social and pastoral services and to be advocates for those who are limited in power, voice and access. We will provide services to any needy person who lives in the Westborough community, irrespective of race, religion or ethnic affiliation.

The Outreach Program has four components at this time: transportation, visitation, emergency home help (includes our meals ministry) and minor repairs. Transportation recipients are most frequently the elderly and people with disabilities. This service involves driving people to and from Mass and any other church functions, doctor’s appointments, therapy and grocery shopping. Time commitment varies, but usually volunteers are called upon once or twice a month. In case of an accident, the Diocese provides insurance coverage.

The Visitation Ministry includes spending time with nursing home residents, the elderly, homebound and people with disabilities. Time commitment required of the volunteer is flexible, but generally is about one hour every two weeks.

Emergency Home Help is for families in crisis. People who have had serious accidents, illnesses, and bereavement and in some case those with financial issues are the recipients of this service. Our main focus in this component is providing meals on a flexible, rotating basis. We also have provided child-care, transportation and shopping, etc. in these situations. The volunteer's time commitment depends on the task at hand.

The fourth area in the Outreach Program is Minor Repairs. This involves minor yard work and repairs for the elderly and people with disabilities. On occasion there may be a large project with a group of volunteers. Time commitment varies based on the project.

As you can see, there are many worthwhile volunteer opportunities at St. Luke’s. If you are interested in volunteering in our Outreach Ministry please complete the volunteer information sheet return it to me. If you have any questions, comments or ideas, I would be happy to hear from you.
